EcoVadis Scope, Methodology, and Position in the ESG Rating Ecosystem

What is EcoVadis?

EcoVadis is a global sustainability rating platform that assesses companies' environmental, social, and ethical performance. Founded in 2007 and headquartered in Paris, EcoVadis has rated the sustainability performance of more than 150,000 companies operating in over 220 sectors across 180 countries. The platform is particularly supply chain-focused, with over 1,200 major buyer companies worldwide using EcoVadis to evaluate supplier sustainability performance.

EcoVadis analyzes companies' non-financial (ESG) practices through an online questionnaire and evidence verification process, assigning a score from 0 to 100 and rating them accordingly with Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum level medals. The rating allows companies to see their corporate social responsibility performance objectively and showcase it to their stakeholders.

What topics and criteria does it cover?

The EcoVadis assessment focuses on four main themes covering 21 sustainability criteria: Environment, Labor and Human Rights, Ethics, and Sustainable Procurement. The assessment covers a wide range of topics under these themes, from carbon emissions to waste management, employee conditions to diversity and inclusion, anti-corruption to data security, and sustainability standards in the supply chain.

The criteria for each theme are based on international sustainability standards; EcoVadis has developed its criteria set to be aligned with key frameworks such as the UN Global Compact, ISO 26000 (Social Responsibility Management System), and GRI. The criteria in the assessment questionnaire are customized for each company, taking into account factors such as the sector in which the company operates, its size, and the countries in which it operates.

What is the P-A-R system used in the assessment methodology?

EcoVadis bases its assessment methodology on three fundamental management pillars, referred to by the acronym "P-A-R" (Policies-Actions-Results). This acronym represents the concepts of Policies, Actions, and Results. Policies refer to the company's written principles, policies, and commitments related to sustainability. Actions encompass the concrete measures, practices, and management systems (e.g., training programs, certifications, audits) taken to implement these policies. Results refer to measurable outputs and actual progress in sustainability performance; the company's key performance indicators, publicly reported data, and progress toward targets are evaluated.

EcoVadis analysts score companies based on seven management indicators while reviewing the evidence they provide across these three dimensions. These indicators include whether the company has written policies and commitments on relevant issues, voluntary endorsements of international principles and initiatives, concrete measures and actions implemented to put these policies into practice, the existence of management system certifications verified by third parties, the extent to which these policies and practices are implemented across all of the company's operational areas and subsidiaries, the monitoring and reporting of performance using quantitative indicators, and the evaluation of feedback from external stakeholders through EcoVadis's "360° Watch" mechanism.

The P-A-R approach enables a more balanced assessment by considering both a company's capacity to implement its commitments and the tangible results it achieves.

How does the scoring system work?

At EcoVadis, each sustainability theme (Environment, Labor and Human Rights, Ethics, Sustainable Procurement) is scored separately, resulting in a theme score between 0 and 100. The impact of these themes on the total score varies depending on the company's sector and activity risk profile; for example, in sectors with high environmental risk, the weight of the Environment theme may be greater. The company's overall EcoVadis score is calculated by combining the weighted theme scores.

At the end of the assessment process, companies receive their results in the form of a detailed scorecard. This scorecard indicates the numerical scores as well as the company's strengths and areas for improvement for each theme, allowing the company to see where it is performing well and where it needs to improve. EcoVadis scores correspond to medal levels based on specific ranges or percentiles. According to the 2024 medal thresholds:

  • Platinum: 80–100 points (highest level)

  • Gold: 72–79 points

  • Silver: 64–71 points

  • Bronze: 56–63 points

Companies scoring below these thresholds do not receive a medal. Medals are awarded to companies that have established a strong management system in the EcoVadis assessment and demonstrate high performance in addressing sustainability criteria.

EcoVadis medal criteria are reviewed over time and changed when necessary. As of 2025, medal achievement will be determined based on the percentile ranking among all evaluated companies, encouraging companies to continuously improve to remain competitive.

Overall, EcoVadis' scoring system positions companies relative to their peers and encourages improvement, rather than providing an absolute "pass/fail" assessment.

What is EcoVadis' position in the ERM "Rate the Raters 2025" report?

The latest ERM Sustainability Institute "Rate the Raters 2025" report on corporate sustainability ratings shows that EcoVadis has achieved a prominent position in market perception. In a survey of 386 sustainability professionals from 39 countries included in this report, participants were asked about the quality and usefulness levels of different ESG rating organizations. According to the results, EcoVadis was selected as the third highest-rated ESG rating organization in the world in terms of rating quality (it was fifth in 2023). In the Usability/Benefit category, EcoVadis ranked first, leaving all its competitors behind.

The report states that this first place reflects companies' growing interest in supply chain sustainability data and that EcoVadis' popularity in this area is rapidly increasing. Overall, the findings of "Rate the Raters 2025" reveal that EcoVadis is seen as the industry leader in providing practical benefits to companies.

Overall Assessment

EcoVadis has established a strong position in sustainability assessments with its comprehensive set of criteria, compliance with international standards, and supply chain-focused approach. It offers significant advantages such as transparency, comparability, and risk management, particularly for multinational companies. It guides companies on their sustainability journey by providing development-oriented feedback.

However, the system also has some structural challenges. The time and resource requirements of the assessment process can create access difficulties for small businesses. Furthermore, criticisms such as the lack of complete transparency in the scoring system, the risk of encouraging superficial implementation of the document-based approach, and the development of a score-focused culture are issues awaiting resolution for EcoVadis' impact to be more firmly established.
